One of the biggest obstacles many online marketers face, both new and seasoned, is getting website traffic. There’s a lot to do and not a whole lot of time to do it.

Consider for a moment that to get that site traffic you want you need to:

Submit Articles to article directories.

Submit videos to video directories.

Submit to social bookmarking websites.

Fill out all those CAPCHA forms (and we all know how easy those are to read right?)

Keep records of where you’ve submitted your content.

Optimize your content.

And guess what? You have to do this every-single-day.

Miracle Traffic Bot

Click here to visit Miracle Traffic Bot’s Website

This is selling like crazy (over 600 sales in this past week per Clickbank) and here’s what it says it can do for you:

Get massive website traffic without paying for it. This is the ideal situation. Costs to advertise using PPC have gone through the roof! Anymore it’s not difficult to spend $100 a day in PPC advertising. Free website traffic is the “holy grail” – literally.

Dominate the search engines without wasting your money and your time.

Get hundreds of backlinks without using SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Now to be quite honest, I’m a big fan of SEO and know that it works – so I am a little unsure about this claim.

Zero risk is involved.

Here’s the details:

It will instantly submit your videos, your websites and your affiliate links to authority video sharing sites.

It will get you backlinks from major bookmarking sites. On autopilot.

It will submit your articles for you.

It does it quickly.

It solves CAPCHA’s for you.

It claims 100% hands free automation & SPAM protection.

You can set it up so that you can schedule your content to go out.

It will save a record of where you’ve submitted your content (this is HUGE because it’s very time-consuming to do this on your own).

Miracle Traffic Bot is a desktop software that installs on your computer.

It’s created by Paul Ponna who has other product successes like:

Copy n Paste Systems

Disk Mojo

Auction Acrobat

Magic List Bot

and more.

Now for the Cons

I have not personally used the program but there are many who have. Here’s what I’ve learned:

$77 one-time fee with a $39.00 monthly fee.

Submits to 10 article sites (without the premium option)

Submits to 10 social bookmarking sites (without the premium option)

Submits to 10 video sites (without the premium option)

If you remain a monthly member you get 2 more sites per month.

No pinging services.

Multiple refunds being requested by savvy internet marketers

To read in-depth information on people who have used this product already you’ll want to visit the Warrior Forum.

Based on what I’ve read thus far, people are not impressed. Use your own judgement but be sure you read the reviews of actual users.

SENuke

Click here to visit the SENuke Website

In the same set of posts I mentioned before there is a lot of praise for SENuke. Now, SENuke has been out for a lot longer but here’s what SENuke offers:

Notifies 65 of the Internet’s most visited Web 2.0 sites. (Including video sites, RSS sites & social bookmarking sites).

Let’s you find the easiest keyword to rank well for.

Automatically create blogs, hubs, articles and wikis at 13 high PR (PageRank), high authority sites.

Allows you to re-post to blogs/wikis/and hubs created by SENuke as many times as you want.

Create hundreds of article variations with one seed article.

Link all of your submissions together with one click.

Instant video submission to the top 14 and growing video websites online.

You don’t have to know how to create a video (this is HUGE for a lot of people).

Software is constantly updated.

Live forum exists where you can interact with other users to get tips & such.

And much, much more.

My opinion? If you need to choose a one-stop option, choose SENuke. It has a great track-record and lots of very loyal fans who swear by the software.

Well, the cat’s been let out of the bag so to speak in this discovery by an SEOMoz user, Errioxa.

Now, Errioxa’s native language is Spanish but in his post he did a tremendous job of trying to convey the information he discovered. And here, I’ll try and lay it out for you the best that I can so that you can start using (and testing) this idea yourself.

Essentially what it comes down to is that if you have multiple links on your web page, using link anchors for those links (instead of just a basic static link with nothing more than just anchor text), will generate a unique listing of your site within the search results.

So let’s say you had a website about “weather”. And on that site you had different sections about:

Rain

Snow

Sun

One of your web pages contained three links.

A link to the page about Rain.

A link to the page about Snow.

A link to the page about Sun.

Links to these pages might look like this:

An example (simple anchor text link):

<a href=”http://www.WeatherSite.com/rain.html”>Rain </a>

Example of using link anchors:

<a href=http://www.WeatherSite.com/snow.html#SNOW“>Snow</a>

<a href=”http://www.WeatherSite.com/sun.html#SUN“>Sun</a>

What Errioxa discovered was that by using the link anchors (bolded in the examples above), those pages showed up within the Google search results as an individually targeted and indented page.

I suggest that you try this out for yourself and where you can, add in some link anchors to your own site and see what happens.

Google has released an SEO report (PDF) card which outlines how well their own SEO efforts are doing. So, do they give themselves an A? A B? or an F?

What I found surprising is that a vast majority of what they discovered left them with an “unsatisfactory” rating.

And only one item was listed as having “Excellent Results”.

Here’s some of the details…

Items in red = Needs Improvement

Items in gold = Satisfactory

Items in Green = Excellent

Title tag format and length – Rating 10/100

Description meta tag use – Rating 33/100

Appealing Google sitelinks – Rating 14/44

Clear main page result on Google for [google product] – 89/100

Heading tag use – Rating 61/90

<h1> tag use – Rating 26/61

Logo image link destination – Rating 38/97

Logo image alt text – Rating 57/99

Descriptive internal anchor text – Rating 67/100

Now, this is not all-encompassing, you can read the ratings of items that weren’t graded within the actual SEO Report Card PDF.

What I think is important for you is that you take a look at what they graded themselves on. These are items that they deem important to their own SEO efforts and while it might make you feel better to know that even Google themselves, the owners of the search engine can get less than excellent ratings on their own sites, this isn’t what you should focus on.

Instead, take a look at what Google ranks themselves on, why they are important (provided within the explanations of each item) and what you can do yourself to improve those items on your OWN site.

What I found particularly interesting was the information about H1 tags which has lately gotten a bad rap.

I’ve overheard rumblings of other “experts” who have stated that the use of H1 is unnecessary and that it no longer holds purpose on a web page.

However, if we look at the notes that Google provides within their report card we see this snippet of text:

…Make use of <h1> tags. …while styling your text so it appears larger might achieve the same visual presentation, it does not provide the same semantic meaning to the search engine that an <h1> tag does. The product’s name and/or a few words about its features are great to have in an h1 tag for the product main page.

The bottom line is, if you take a look at what Google believes is important on it’s own sites, then you should take a look at yours and implement those same items.

Are you using H1 tags? Do these H1 tags provide relevant information related to the topic of the page?

Do you want sitelinks to show up for your site? If so, do you have a nice structure to your site so that descriptive anchor text points to these internal pages?

Are your pages nested too deep? In other words, do you have important information located under Home > Link > Link > Link > important information? If so, you may want to re-think how your site is set up.

So take a look at Google’s own SEO report card, read the data they provide on each and even take a look at Google’s own SEO Beginner Guide to help aid you in how your site is viewed by the search engines.

Google Product Listing Ads

This past Wednesday Google announced Product Listing Ads. And rather tell you what they are, let me show you.

This first image is your typical search results page with the ads and organic listings highlighted. This search was for “snow boots”.

Google Product Ads Example 1

This second image is another search results page but this time, this one has the Google Product Listing ads included within it. This search was for “bed in a bag”.

Google Product Listing Ads Example 2

Notice the difference?

The new Google Product Listing ads now allow advertisers to show images next to their advertisements.

This new feature is open to those AdWords advertisers who have products in the Google Merchant Center (formerly Google Base) which was rolled out at the end of September 2009.

Unlike traditional AdWords advertisements where you pay every time someone clicks on one of your ads, you only pay whenever someone actually purchases a product from your site.

Additionally, again unlike AdWords, you don’t have to worry about keywords or any additional advertising text. If a user searches on a keyword phrase that is relevant to a product that you offer and that product is listed in the Google Merchant Center, Google will show the most relevant products for that user along with the image, price and the product name. As Google states:

“Product Listing Ads makes it easy for you to promote your entire product inventory on Google.com.”

It’s currently only available to certain advertisers and is still in beta.

What I find interesting is that not too long ago, some AdSense publishers realized that if you put images next to AdSense ads on your website those AdSense ads received more clicks. This seemed to work very well for a lot of publishers until Google caught onto what was happening and made it “illegal”.

Ironically enough, they’re doing the same exact thing on their search results pages; one can only assume that it actually worked very well and so much so that Google has decided to incorporate the same strategy into their own websites.

All that said, what does this mean to you?

Once Google rolls this out to the public in general, it will be interesting to see if these images also show up in your AdSense ads on your website. If they do and your website refers to say, “bed in a bag”, and Google shows ads in AdSense that also advertise “beds in a bag”, you’ll have to make some decisions as to whether or not you want competitors ads showing up on your site for the same or similar products. I could see a lot of websites opting out of AdSense for this reason.

If you do have products in the Google Merchant Center, because Google will know what converts to a sale and what doesn’t, they’ll now have access to your sales data.

If these images begin to show at the top of the page where current AdWords text ads show, this will push down the organic search results; and in some cases “below the fold”. Which means that web searchers will have to scroll down to view the organic search results.

The bottom line is, if you have a product and it’s listed in the Merchant Center, this could mean higher profits for you.

On the flip side, if you’re simply trying to get your website seen in the organic search results for a product search, you might have to rethink your optimization strategy.

On October 27, 2009, Google was granted a new patent that will adjust where your website sits in the search engines. If you’re interested in the headache-producing patent-speak you can view it here.

Now, it’s my job to help you understand this patent so here I will do my absolute best to de-construct this new patent and help you understand it in plain English.

In a nutshell, this new patent allows Google to take multiple query paths and associate them so that one URL wins out above the others when it’s related to that same kind of query path.

Here’s what I mean.

And for the record, whenever Google refers to “content items” in their patent, or when I refer to them in this blog post, they (and I) are referring to URLs; whether that URL be a “video and/or audio files, web pages for particular subjects, news articles, etc.”

I’ll use an example that Google used in their patent.

When someone visits Google and does a search, during that search session they’ll revise their queries if they aren’t getting the kinds of results that they want, eventually clicking on a URL after they’re done revising their search.

If a “statistically significant number of users” submit that same set of queries and then end up clicking on the same URL this URL will be considered more relevant and that URL will then get a ranking increase.

In another example, if 55% of searchers using a query path such as apples/bananas/strawberries click on FruitURL1 and 35% of searchers using this same path click on FruitURL2, the search engine can rank FruitURL1 first and FruitURL2 second. These can also be ranked as #1 and #2 whenever someone searches on apples/bananas or even apples, bananas, or strawberries as long as that path is identified as being related to the original query path that ranked FruitURL1 first and FruitURL2 second.

In other words, if more people click on FruitURL1 whenever they do a similar query that is identified as part of a query path apples -> bananas -> strawberries, then that URL will get a better ranking in the organic search results.

There’s many more examples provided in the patent itself but suffice it to say, that this is quite honestly, a popularity contest. The more people click through to your website within the organic search results, the more likely you are to have a better ranking.

Think if it like a CTR (click-through-rate) of your website in the natural search results. Much like your positioning in the Google AdWords program is determined by how well your ad performs, such is the case with this new patent. If it’s determined that more people searching on apples/oranges/bananas tend to visit FruitURL1, then FruitURL1 will gain a better position in the organic search engine rankings.

What I found interesting however, is this little snippet of text taken from the patent which gives a little bit of insight into exactly how Google ranks pages.

The search results can, for example, be ranked by a quality measure and a relevance measure. For example, a particular web page can have a quality measure derived from the number of other web pages that are linked to the particular web page, and can have an information retrieval score related to the matching the query terms to words in the particular web page. The information retrieval score can be combined with the page rank to give a final rank to the particular web page.

From this little bit of information we can determine a few things that indicate how Google does in fact rank web pages:

The “quality measure” of a web page is determined by the number of sites linking to that web page (no surprise there).

The “information retrieval score” is determined by the number of matching query terms on the web page. Note that this doesn’t mention where on the web page, only that it looks at the web page itself to see if there are matching query terms.

The “information retrieval score” can be combined with the page rank to give the page a final rank. Here again is the dreaded PageRank. Now, to be fair, the term “page rank” is not capitalized nor does it have a trademark symbol associated with it, but one can only assume that PageRank is definitely playing a role in how web pages rank even though Google has recently removed PageRank from the Google Webmaster tools area (and updated PageRank across the board just recently). Check out this post by Barry Schwartz where he states that “…according to Susan Moskwa from the Google Webmaster Central team “…it [PageRank] was removed [from Google's Webmaster tools] because Google keeps telling webmasters “that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much.” They felt it was “silly” to keep telling webmasters that, and at the same time show it in Webmaster Tools. So Google removed it from Webmaster Tools. I think this is a good thing, since I agree it is obsessed over too much, plus what Google showed in Webmaster Tools was not very useful to webmasters.”So, all this said, I wonder then why it’s referred to within the patent? Since it’s not used in it’s proper form, spelled PageRank, do we then assume that they’re just using the phrase “page rank” as an overall encompassing term, not associated with the actual trademarked PageRank?

Since they’ve removed it from Google Webmaster tools but then days later updated the PageRank on the Google toolbar across the board for websites, one can only assume that they are referring to actual PageRank. Never let it be said that Google was transparent.

The bottom line is, this new patent appears as though it will begin ranking web content based upon the number of clicks that an individual URL gets by actual web searchers and the paths that they take to get there. So my advice to you, as a website owner, is to be sure that people want to click over to your website.

Do you offer compelling reasons to do so? Are these reasons contained within your web pages’ descriptions?

If not, now might be a good time to get to work on that.

Many website owners have not just one website but many and all on a similar topic. And because of this, they oftentimes like to link them together in the hopes of getting a better position in the search engines.

Ideally, their hope is that if they link all of the smaller niche websites to the main website, that this will give that main website more credibility in the search engines.

This is what’s called a “Mini-Net”. A set of websites that one person owns and that are all inter-linked together.

Let’s take an example shall we?

Let’s say Webmaster Joe likes the topic of hair removal. So he builds a website that focuses on laser hair removal. But, Webmaster Joe has also learned that if you build other, smaller websites that talk about a nichier (is that a word?) topic yet one still related to the main overall topic, and then link them together that this will help where his main website is listed in the search engines.

So Webmaster Joe creates 5 more websites all on similar but less competitive terms:

cosmetic hair removal

skin hair removal

upper lip hair removal

affordable hair removal

hair removal surgery

These smaller, nichier sites aren’t high-quality by any means but they all have an article or two on them about the main keyword phrase they’re focused on.

The point of these additional sites is not to have them rank well but to have the main website that talks about Laser Hair Removal rank well which is his money phrase.

So Webmaster Joe visits a hosting company (HostGator is a good one that I personally recommend) and purchases a shared hosting package that allows him to have multiple websites on the same IP address.

What this means is that Webmaster Joe can add as many websites as he wants to his hosting account; doesn’t sound like much of an issue until you realize that they’re all on the same IP address.

This is important because when search engines like Google come to pay a visit to all of these websites, they’ll see that they’re all linked together but they also all reside on the same IP address which diminishes their importance.

Think of it like this:

Let’s say that someone recommends a movie to you. Later, five other people recommend that same exact movie to you so you start to think “Wow! This must be a really great movie!”. You find out later that all of these five people live in the same house, maybe they’re related to one another maybe not. The point is, the only time you’ve gotten a recommendation to see the movie was from someone who lived in that house.

All of a sudden, that recommendation doesn’t seem so great does it?

The search engines feel the same way with websites. Obviously if there are multiple websites all linking to one place, but all of those links reside at the same address (the IP address) of the site they’re linking to, then all of a sudden, it doesn’t look so great to the search engines.

And will eventually get you penalized. Can I say that for certain? Can I guarantee that? Obviously, no, since I don’t run the search engines but I can tell you this. It’s not something that I would recommend you trying during your online career…unless you’re into that kind of thing.

The bottom line is, a mini-net is nothing more than a group of websites usually all owned by the same website owner that link to one another in the hopes of getting better rankings for those websites.

Do these mini-nets always reside on the same IP addresses? Obviously, no. The savvy website owners have come to realize that this will get them penalized in the search engines, and so they’ve scoped out ways of getting around this IP issue.

Does that always work? No. As a matter of fact, it borders on “black hat seo” techniques. Or in other words those techniques that the search engines frown upon.

But, that’s not the purpose of this post. This post is to explain to you what a mini-net is and why people use it.

As always, leave your comments if you feel up to it

I highly doubt if you’re a website owner, that you are thrilled about Google’s SideWiki – if you are, you’re site probably hasn’t reached the massive proportions yet where you’ve become so well known, everyone wants to spam you.

Spam is there in our email, and in our blog comments. But thankfully, we can control our email – marking something as spam (note this is not the same thing as marking something as *spam* if you simply didn’t feel like reading today) and we as site owners, especially those who have blogs, can moderate the comments so that you don’t get those nasty Viagra links everyone just loves *chuckles*.

But, with the Google SideWiki … drumroll please…you CAN’T control what spammy comments are made even though it appears as though it resides on your own site!

Let me explain…

If you have the new Google toolbar installed, you will have an option in that toolbar called “SideWiki”. If you click on that SideWiki button, a window to your left will open up and you can then leave any kind of comment you wish in that box.

Now, granted, you have to sign into your Google account to leave a comment in a site’s SideWiki area but anyone and their brother can sign up for a Google account. Big deal.

Once you’re signed in, you can then leave a comment on that website (and note, it does not have to be a blog. It can be any website whatsoever.) And those comments can be good, bad, indifferent, nonsense, jokes, whatever.

Now, most people will (hopefully) adhere to that unspoken rule to be “an adult” online and actually leave helpful comments – even if some are bad, there is such a thing as constructive criticism. But it’s the “others” that you, as a website owner should be concerned with.

You see, you, as a site owner have absolutely no control over what shows up in that Sidewiki. (is your mouth hanging open in astonishment yet?)

Scary isn’t it?

Anyone, anywhere, at any point in time now has the ability to make comments on your website and you, as the site owner, have no say in what’s there.

There’s no place in Google where you can choose to opt-out of having this SideWiki show up on your site, and for those who are less familiar with how the SideWiki works, your typical website visitor will most certainly believe that you chose to have those comments there, good, bad or indifferent.

You can report a Sidewiki comment to Google, but this doesn’t mean that they’ll rush right out and remove it for you…frankly I think that Google is getting too big for it’s britches and for some reason believes that IT knows better than the site owners themselves.

Say, that reminds me of something…oh yeah, the Borg.

So, all that said, here’s a somewhat bright side (kind of).

In the Google Webmaster Help forum, there is a link to a JavaScript file which states that using the file will block those who try to use Sidewiki on your site.

BE WARNED! I have not used this file – I don’t know if it works or not, and I also have no idea of any SEO implications it might have. But it’s there, if you decide to use it.

Since it blocks those who try to use SideWiki on your site, this will hold true for both good and bad comments – so use it at your own risk.

If I get ballsy enough, I’ll toss it in on one of my sites to see if it makes a difference at all for SEO purposes – but, in the event that you already have good rankings on a site, I wouldn’t go using it.

Hopefully, Google will come to their senses and allow website owners to moderate the commentary there themselves, or, better yet, do away with it all-together.

Anyhow, there you go. Have a great day!
